The birthstone for April, the name Diamond is derived from the Greek word 'Adamas' meaning invincible. The stone scores a 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale and is one of the most durable substances in the world, which is one of the main reasons why diamonds are so popular in jewellery.

A diamond forms over millions of years, deep underground within the earth's crust. A rough diamond is essentially crystalized carbon which is the result of intense pressure and heat over time. The rough is then polished and cut to turn into the sparkly gemstone that we all know and love.

In ancient times it was believed that Diamonds were tears from the gods or splinters from shooting stars.

Diamonds are found all over the world and some of the biggest mines are situated in Russia, Botswana, Canada and South Africa.

Diamonds are graded using the 4 c's; Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat. To learn more check out our diamond buying guide here!

Diamonds are often given on a 60th Wedding Anniversary.
