Tourmaline was first discovered in the late 1600's off the West Coast of Italy by Dutch Traders. The name is derived from the Sinhalese term "Turmali", a name given to all the coloured crystals on the island of Sri Lanka at the time. Displaying the most colour range of all the gemstones, they can be found in every colour of the spectrum. Tourmalines are mined in Afganistan, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Greenland, Bolivia, Mozambique, Nigeria. Burme, Russia, India, Brazil, Madagascar, Italy and the US.

A stone of reconciliation, Tourmalines foster compassion and help to ground the wearer. Once believed to hold healing powers, in the 18th century, a Dutch scientist claimed that a tourmaline wrapped in silk and placed against the cheek of a feverish child could help them to sleep. In modern times, Tourmalines are worn to protect the wearer against danger.

It is the preferred gemstone for 8th wedding anniversaries.
