The fiery Ruby, one of the big 4 gemstones (Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Diamond) is the birthstone for all of our July babies. An extremely sought-after stone, Rubies can fetch the highest per-carat price of all the coloured gemstones.

The name "Ruby" is derived from the Latin word "Rubens" which translates to red. Part of the corundum family, Rubies are found in many shades of red, starting from a deep, rich red to a pinkish-red. The red colouring actually comes from trace amounts of chromium.

It was once believed that Rubies held the power of life, due to the colouring being similar to the redness of blood. Another legend is that warriors in Myanmar (known then as Burma) thought that rubies would make them invincible in battle. They would actually insert the rubies into their skin to make them part of their bodies.

Rubies are often given as romantic gifts and are said to be stones of love, passion, vitality and power.

Rubies are often given on a 40th Wedding Anniversary
